AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE

SIOUX STYLE FLINT BAG

The Spirit Catcher symbolizes man's desire to reach for the heavens and touch the spirit world.  The Native American is bound to earth, a constraint that does not hold man's universal yearning to reach for the heavens spiritually and physically.

His great reverence for nature is stitched onto the moccasins in a beaded design which is a circle enclosing a cross.  The circle represents nature in a never ending cycle, changing from season to season, and in the cross the four directions:  North, South, East and West.

The Eagle, a great mysterious being that soars effortlessly up to the heavens, is the desire of the human heart to be lifted up and made light.  We strain to touch and grasp that which we do not understand, thus being enlightened.  The Spirit Catcher is a metaphor for human growth and the desire to reach for our dreams.
